The best advice on shading Black & Grey is to use a suitable tattoo machine, the right needles and good black ink and/or greywashes. Most artists prefer a machine with a softer hit for this style (stroke 2.5mm – 3.5mm), shader needles and curved magnum needles. When it comes to ink we can recommend Eternal Ink’s MAXX Black, which is great to thin down and create your own greywash. If you prefer a greywash set, you should have a look at Nocturnal Ink’s range and the new Greywash Set by Dynamic Ink.
If you want to get to know different techniques for shading, we recommend to watch and ask other professional tattoo artists that tattoo the style you would like to learn.
